Douyin (抖音) is ByteDance's Chinese short-video app — the same company as TikTok, and that's misconception number one: Douyin and TikTok are not the same app. They are two deliberately separated universes: different app, different servers, different accounts, and entirely different content. A creator famous on Douyin may not exist on TikTok at all.

The real bottleneck isn't a block — it's the ecosystem:
- The app isn't on Thai stores. Douyin ships only through Chinese app stores: iPhone needs a Chinese Apple ID, Android means hunting down an installer file — and we don't recommend sideloading APKs from random sources (high, unverifiable malware risk).
- Full features are tied to a Chinese phone number. Watching logged-out works to a point, but commenting, following, and posting need an account, which is anchored to a mainland phone number. That is the real wall for anyone outside China.
- Some content is region-locked by the platform itself and won't play abroad.
